Travel Backpacks For Solo Travelers – Introduction

If you a solo traveler in the market for the best travel backpack for your next journey you must ask yourself these fundamental questions:

  1. What is important to you?
  2. Would you buy this travel backpack?
  3. How much are you willing to pay for the best travel backpack?

What Features Are Important To You?

When I was searching for the right travel backpack especially for solo travel, I wanted one that combined all the features several bags I had previously owned into one great backpack.

The features I wanted to see combined in one bag was the following:

  1. While wearing a backpack, it should have a pocket for electronics in which the zipper is closest to my back to ensure my electronics are safe. With each zipper having a safety mechanism that would slow down any potential theft.
  2. Having a travel backpack that can easily be converted into a crossbody bag if I wanted.
  3. The ability to easily expand or contract enough to be able to hold enough gear depending on the length of travel. Plus, meet the international carryon size requirements for easy storage in most overhead compartments on the planes today.
  4. Additional features I was looking for were an expandable water bottle side-pocket, padded hip belt, and a roller bag handle.

What size backpack for traveling? – Backpack sizes are usually described in liters of volume they can hold. Usually, 15-30 liters is regarded as a daypack, 30-40 liters is large enough for a weekend trip or carry-on only travel, and 45-65 liters is for those who need to pack extra clothing or gear.

Suitcases aren’t designed for international travel. You know why rolling luggage doesn’t work in a city if you’ve tried lugging a suitcase with cheap plastic wheels through the cobblestone streets of Paris. Backpacks in the shape of cylinders aren’t any better. They leave your belongings in a confused mess since you pack them from the top, like a rubbish bag.

They’re also too huge for lone travelers to carry on a plane, so you’re stuck with checked baggage fees, baggage claim hassles, and the stress of misplaced luggage. With one of the best travel backpacks, you’ll never have to pay airline baggage fees again.

The Setout is a 45-liter carry-on backpack with a maximum capacity of 45 liters. The Setout is 22 x 14 x 9 inches, which is the standard size for carry-on luggage. (Before flying, always check your airline’s policies.)

Packs like a suitcase and carries like a backpack.

Like a suitcase, the Setout opens from the front. As you travel, you can effortlessly stuff your backpack and keep everything nicely arranged.

With the Setout’s hip belt, you can save your shoulders. The belt shifts up to 80% of the weight of your bag from your shoulders to your hips. If your torso is 17-19 inches long, the Setout will fit you best.

Locking zippers, a laptop sleeve, external and inner pockets, air mesh back padding, and a sleeve to tuck your straps into for protection while in transit are all included in the Setout.

This is why it’s one of the most resilient travel bags.

Backpack Best for Adventure Travel: Osprey Porter 46 Backpack

osprey porter 46 travel backpack

This flexible weekend getaway bag, the largest carry-on compliant Osprey Porter, is ready for anything.

The Porter Series has established the standard for premium duffels, with padded sidewalls, simple organization, and a significant suspension for backpack-style carry that disappears when checking bags.

This season, a separate zippered laptop and tablet compartment has been relocated, as well as efficient storage solutions for both large and small goods with various access points.

When a duffel isn’t enough and backpacking bags are too much, the Porter is the answer.

  1. Large panel lockable zip access to the main compartment
  2. Reinforced cord loops to attach an Osprey Daylite daypack
  3. Front panel vertical zippered pocket for books travel documents and more
  4. Padded top and side handles provide comfortable carry
  5. Carry-on compatible

One of the best backpacks for solo travelers that need that extra room.

Best Packable Backpack: Osprey Ultralight Stuff Pack

Osprey Ultralight Stuff Pack

The Best Backpacks are only the start of the adventure. Osprey creates large and small gear-carrying systems.

When traveling or hiking, a tiny day pack is frequently required to carry only the basics for a day excursion and then disappear when not in use. With luxury features not found in other crushable daypacks, the Osprey Ultralight Stuff Pack does just that.

These cleverly designed accessories allow you to pack more quickly, remain more organized, and find and grab the stuff you need when you need it before it ends up in a pack. When it came to selecting a daypack to pack in my 40-liter suitcase for a trip to Europe, I had a few precise requirements.

They were:

  1. 15-20 liters
  2. More than just one big zippered pouch
  3. An external water bottle holder
  4. Less than 10 oz
  5. Packs small (for some reason a lot of “packable” daypacks don’t pack down that small)
  6. Less than $50

Let me state unequivocally that no other bag came close to meeting these criteria. Most packable daypacks lack a mesh water bottle pocket, which was a must-have for me.

Another feature I needed that most bags lack is a pocket where I could keep my wallet, keys, phone, and other valuables without having to rummage through the main compartment of the bag. Check. ADDITIONALLY, IT WEIGHS 3.2 OUNCES. It’s unheard of for a bag to contain more than one large zip pouch.

I’m an Osprey fanatic (my 40 L bag is the Osprey Farpoint), therefore I was overjoyed to come across this backpack. The water bottle pocket is deep, and my Klean Kanteen never tried to escape.

I will note that when packed, the fabric can be a little see-through, so be aware of what you have against the outside. However, any lightweight bag made of this material will have this problem.

Shoulder straps, back panel, and hip belt are ergonomically engineered for optimal comfort, with padding and moisture-wicking to keep you cool. A safety whistle is attached to the sternum strap.

Two zippered peek-through mesh packing compartments, one with an additional mesh pocket for organizing, are revealed via a traditional suitcase-style butterfly opening.

Exterior features:

  • Three zippered front panel pockets with mesh slip pockets. One with a mesh packing compartment that is accessible from the front of the pack and can also be accessed from the u-shaped main duffle opening.

  • Two slip pockets.

Backpack Best for One-bag Trips: eBags TLS Mother Lode Weekender Convertible

eBags TLS Mother Lode Weekender Convertible

It’s everything your wheeled carry-on should be, but isn’t. It’s one of the Best Backpacks for Solo Travel because of this. It includes a lot of pockets, both inside and exterior, to help you arrange your life while you’re on the road.

Do you require a place to store your laptop? There’s a place for that in the pocket. Is your boarding pass still valid? There’s a place for that in the pocket. Ebags has thought of everything so you don’t have to—at least when it comes to packing.

Pro Tip: It’s a perfect fit for the 6pc Classic Packing Cube Set. It also has external compression straps that can be buckled and cinched down to guarantee it fits in the overhead bin even when fully packed.

You’ll never lose your backpack, though, because it’s carry-on friendly. Ever.

eBags Mother Lode Weekender Convertible Features:

  • 2 exterior quick-grab zip pockets
  • Zip expansion for an extra 1.5″
  • 4 exterior compression straps
  • Stowable backpack straps
  • Breathable back panel for comfort; removable, adjustable sternum strap

I wasn’t sure about this bag at first, but I wanted to give it a shot. With this bag, I made it through a two-and-a-half-week tour around Europe in the dead of winter!

Invest in packing bags/cubes as well, as these can help you stay organized when you have a backpack and a lot of goods. There were numerous compartments, and I was able to secure my belongings in my luggage using TSA locks.

If you don’t require a true backpacking bag, I highly recommend it. Even when stuffed full, it fits in the overhead and under-seat compartments of airlines!

Best Wheeled Backpack: Osprey Packs Sojourn Wheeled Luggage

Osprey Packs Sojourn Wheeled Luggage

When you need to travel far and light, the Sojourn 45 Liter /22-inch backpack is one of the best options. The stowaway AG-inspired backpack suspension, which is already a superb roller, broadens your trip’s prospects.

You won’t have to wait at baggage claim to begin your adventure because it’s designed to satisfy most carry-on size limitations. Although rolling luggage is convenient, there are instances when the terrain is too difficult to navigate and a backpack is required.

This is made possible by the Sojourn’s quick-deploy AG-inspired vented backpack suspension, which is more comfortable than some competitors’ backpacking packs.

The dual-tube extended handle regulates cumbersome weights when the going gets tough, and various padded and molded handles make it easy to carry this pack out of taxis or tuk-tuks if you’re seeking backpacks with wheels.

The majority of European cities have cobblestone sidewalks and streets. The narrow wheels on most roller bags get routed into the ruts of the cobblestones, making hauling the bag a chore.

This backpack has broad, fat wheels with a wide diameter that move easily over cobblestones.

Best Backpack For The Minimalist: Db Hugger 30L Travel Backpack

Db Hugger 30L Travel Backpack Black

The Db Hugger 30L Travel Backpack is the newest addition to the finest backpacks for single travelers.

This bag has a lot of appealing features. The main component functions similarly to a duffel bag in that you open it up and load it with anything you need, knowing that the bag will keep it secure, safe, and even retain its form while loaded with whatever you have loaded with.

The top section includes a convenient room to keep your cords, minor accessories, hotel cards, cash, and other items you need access to the most (portable batteries, game system, thumb drive, passport, anything).

This purse is the epitome of minimalism. I can’t explain how impressed I was with the backpack; usually, backpacks in this price range have hundreds of pockets and zippers to hold your belongings, making it difficult to remember where you put something or if it even exists.

The bag preserves its shape and is a joy to use. It helps you focus by packing the goods you need and organizing them as needed in the two major regions. It secures my belongings and is roomy while maintaining its shape.

If you’re seeking the finest backpacks for solo travel, I hope these recommendations will assist you in picking the best choice for your next adventure.
