DJI PRODUCTS – Being an independent filmmaker, I am always looking for ways to cut costs to maintain a low budget during filming.
Sometimes I have to sacrifice a few things like types of shots to complete my project without going bankrupt.
On a recent scouting location during preproduction, I was looking at ways to do a crazy crane shot to open my film.
When I explained to my cinematographer what I wanted to do, she laughed hysterically at what I wanted to do. She told me that the only way I could pull that off sadly was by using a drone.
Filmmaking with a drone wasn’t something that was taught to me in film school, so I had no clue where to start.
But, after doing some research on drone filmmaking, I was excited about the shooting possibilities I could do in my film with a drone and keep my film within budget as well.
This is where I came across DJI, and the product line that Dji has in terms of filmmaking and other photography uses.
Let’s just say that I got excited about not only DJI’s Drone line up, but other Dji Products like gimbals and cameras.
In this post, I will give a small overview of the DJI Company, the products they make, and what the best Dji products would be great for any filmmaking kit whether you are a beginner filmmaker or experienced one.

Why You Should Buy A DJI Drone?
When most of us are looking into a new product, the thought that goes our heads is ” is this investment worth it.”
I know that when I was looking into drones for filmmaking, that was the question that I struggled with for a few months.
But, after researching the DJI Drones, I knew that buying one would be the smartest thing that I would do for my filmmaking.
Here is my reason why you should buy a DJI Drone if you want to take your photography or videography to the next level.
A Whole New Photographic Perspective – Many of us in our daily routines only see what’s in front of us and never see beyond that point.
For example, we see our homes from street level daily, but do we ever see what our homes look like from the sky?
Unless you own your very own helicopter or live close to a mountain that gives you that ability to look down from the sky, how else can view our homes from above without falling off a ladder?
That’s why drones have such a major appeal, they introduce us to a new way of seeing the world.
Plus, with the incredible cameras that are attached to the DJI drones, anyone can take amazing photographs and videos that they never thought were possible.
Below are 2 Dji Drones that you should consider buying if you are thinking about buying a drone.

DJI Camera Stabilzers / Gimbals
What is a Camera Gimbal/Stabilizer?
The technical explanation of a camera gimbal/stabilizer is that it’s a pivoted support system that can control the rotation of an object on a single axis.
By stabilizing with three gimbals on the X, Y, and Z-axis you can efficiently stabilize the flow of a camera system.
Do you Need A Camera Gimbal For Filming?
If you are filming a subject, you can shoot footage without a camera gimbal/stabilizer, but if you do shoot with one, it will massively enhance the stabilization of the handheld camera movement.
Benefits of a Gimbal
Having a camera gimbal not only improves the stabilization of handheld footage, but it also is a great lightweight piece of filmmaking equipment that can fit in a filmmaking kit with ease.
The initial camera setup only takes less than an hour, and you will be ready to shoot from the point forward.
No longer does the filmmaker need to carry around with them a dolly and the awkward dolly tracks for every shoot.
The DJI Ronin-S is one of the DJI Products that DSLR / Mirrorless camera users have been looking for.
This pro-level handheld camera stabilization is a standard tool on movie sets of all sizes, and this latest addition brings excellent camera stabilization technology to its most compact design yet.
So small you can use it with one hand!
Why Should You Buy A Ronin-SC
First off, I am not an established filmmaker, I am still making short films monthly and making mistakes along the way.
The reason why I bought a Ronin-SC for my filmmaking kit was that I needed to take my film footage to a whole new cinematic level.
Since most of my short films I film are done by a fly by the seat of my pants speed, having bulky stabilizing equipment on the ready, is virtually impossible for me to do.
When I am filming a short film, I am either shooting at home ( which is the best and cheapest location to shoot in) or outdoors in areas with minimal crew and passers by’s interrupting my filming.
At home, I can use a tripod for stabilization, and that works perfectly for me.
But, when I am shooting outdoors with my Sony a7III and I want to include a lot of Steadicam shots in my footage, I have my Ronin-s charged and ready to go.
Like I mentioned above, the initial setup of the DJI Ronin-s is very straight forward, and DJI has a great video tutorial for setting up the Ronin-SC.
What are the features of Ronin-SC?
ActiveTrack 3.0 uses optimized deep-learning algorithms for precise tracking, providing framing assistance to take complex shots with ease.
Force Mobile gives ultra-low latency and smooth control, making camera orientation control more intuitive.
Ronin-SC’s ActiveTrack 3.0 supports most mainstream smartphones.
Here are the smartphone models compatible with the Ronin-SC:
- Samsung – Galaxy S10+, Galaxy S9+, Galaxy S9, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S5, A9 Note 9
- Google – Nexus 6P
- Huawei – P20 Pro, P10, P9, Mate10 Mate 9 Pro, Nava3e, MT7-TL00

- Vivo – X21A, X27, NEXS

What is the difference between Ronin-SC and Ronin-S?
The DJI Products Line for gimbals includes the amazing Ronin-SC which is more tailored towards mirrorless cameras but also includes the Ronin-S which is designed for large and heavy cameras such as DSLRs.
Based on my experience, the Max. Battery Life on both Ronin’s is around 11 hours.
What is the price of Ronin-SC? Are there different versions available?
Which Ronin should you use in your filmmaking kit?
If you have a mirrorless camera and want to use it to film videos on the go, chances are Ronin-SC is your best choice.
Ronin-SC is not only lighter and more portable, but it also incorporates multiple intelligent functions and user-friendly hardware designs optimized for reliable performance.
DJI Vlogging / Action Cameras
Filmmaking doesn’t mean for the big screen anymore, there is a new type of filmmaking that is taking the internet by storm and that is vlogging.
Sure many vloggers are using their smartphones and DSLR’s/Mirrorless Cameras to upload video footage to the internet, but why not carry a camera built for vlogging?
DJI Osmo Pocket
The Osmo Pocket is a compact camera that fits nicely in the palm of a hand. Thanks to its transportable design, a vlogger or filmmaker will have no difficulties taking it around and filming with it throughout your day.
At the core of Osmo Pocket is an unbelievable 3-axis mechanical gimbal that automatically stabilizes film footage, allowing the filmmaker/vlogger to focus more attention on capturing the perfect shot.
The Osmo Pocket can capture photos in amazing detail thanks to a 1/2.3-inch sensor, 80° wide-angle lens, and f/2.0 aperture. It also works as a strong accessory for filmmaking, shooting 4K/60fps video at 100Mbps.
On the device, there is a 1.08-inch integrated touchscreen that can be used for a live view or playback and device navigation.
Underneath the LED screen is two dedicated buttons. The left button enables you to take a picture or start and stop recording a video.
The button on the right can be used to turn Osmo Pocket on and off. One-click and you’re ready to go!
ActiveTrack & FaceTrack
Another feature that I love while filming on the Osmo Pocket is the ActiveTrack recognizes, follows, and films your subject of choice.
Osmo Pocket also features for vloggers a FaceTrack which automatically detects faces during Selfie mode, keeping the vlogger in the spotlight of filming.
Curious if the Osmo Pocket’s compatibility with smartphones and other accessories?
The great news is that the Osmo Pocket’s Universal Port is a multifunctional expansion interface that connects the device to smartphones and several other accessories.
When connected to a smartphone, a filmmaker/vlogger can use the smartphone screen to control Osmo Pocket and access its features.
A fully charged Osmo Pocket can record unto a 140-minute video.
In addition to this, with a one-hour fast charge, the battery can be boosted to a 90% charge.
The Osmo Mobile 2 truly excels in this category, with up to 15 hours of battery life!
Who Should Buy The Osmo Pocket?
Any vlogger/filmmaker will be impressed at the capability of the Osmo Pocket!
Combined with its mechanical 3-axis gimbal and powerful camera that shoots high quality still images and videos, Osmo Pocket is truly a game-changer.
Accessory Kit An Osmo Pocket Owner Needs:

DJI Osmo Action
Of the many great DJI products out there today, the one that has me the most excited about it is DJI’s Osmo Action Camera.
This versatile camera features DJI’s Rocksteady stabilization technology and shoots 4K/60fps, 4K HDR video, 8x slow motion, and so much more.
Plus, it’s dustproof, waterproof, and tough enough to bring along on any adventure.
Here are just a few reasons why the DJI Osmo Action Camera is a great replacement for smartphone filmmaking.
Waterproof Up to 11 Meters
If you are a filmmaker thinking about shooting some underwater sequences in your film, the great thing about the Osmo action camera vs many smartphones is that it’s waterproof up to a depth of 11 meters vs most smartphones of 2 meters.
Plus, if you are thinking about going deeper in-depth with the Osmo action camera, in the DJI products accessory line, there is an underwater casing that can allow the Osmo action camera to go further in depths up to 60 meters.
Shaky camera footage can take away any momentum being built in a scene.
I made a short film recently in which my editor added a shaky camera filter into my footage, and after 30 seconds of watching the footage I almost threw up.
Osmo Action’s advanced stabilization technology, gimbal-like smoothness is one tap away.
Whether you’re mountain-biking down a dirt track, or just filming on a bumpy road, footage stays shake-free and amazing.
And, with the accompanying DJI Mimo app, you can instantly share that footage on social media platforms.
Designed for Effortless Selfies, Vlogging, and Filmmaking
With a 1.4-inch front display, Osmo Action lets you compose yourself in the frame effortlessly.
Most smartphones have a 7MP front-facing camera that can record 1080P video, but Osmo Action’s front screen allows you to capture 12MP shots and record 4K/60fps in both JPEG and DNG formats, giving the filmmaker complete control in post-processing.
Plus, with Osmo Action’s 145° field of view, it will capture the scene as you see it, ensuring your footage is as detailed as the experience.
Who Is The Osmo Action Made For?
If you are a filmmaker just starting out in building your own filmmaking kit, you can find it can be costly at the start.
But, from what I have learned over the past few years is that it doesn’t matter what type of equipment you use, it’s how good the story is and does it capture the audience.
Even though the story is extremely important to the end product, it’s always nice to add a visionary look to the film.
With the DJI Products I have mentioned above, they can make your film stand out no matter how much you save.
