But when I started running, the clothing I was wore wasn’t made of the greatest materials on the planet.

My body was in a constant battle of dealing with clothing that made me constantly drip of sweat, or make me chafe in areas nobody wants to have chaffed.

Running Shoes

Running Gear

The first piece of running gear that you need to start running is the right pair of running shoes.

While the latest running shoes on the market today can be complicated with all of the new space-age technology put into the shoes.

But here are a few things that you need to pay attention to in shopping for the right running shoe.

Sizing – When you are shopping for the perfect shoes for running, you need to make sure that are the right fit for your feet.

The key to having the right fit for your feet is to make sure that your heels have no room for movement, and your toes are not bunched together at the top of the shoe.

Features of the shoe – Most modern running shoes available today have breathable material to allow for your feet to stay dry while running.

The key to having the right running shoe for you depends on the terrain where you are running the most.

If most of your runs involve off-road trail running, then stick with a grippy trail shoe that will keep you steady on rocky terrain.

If you are thinking about road running, then look for running shoes with lightweight foam soles to decrease the amount of energy being used on each stride.

Running Socks

If you are investing in a great pair of running shoes, you need to invest in a great pair of running socks.

Why? Because what’s the point of spending hundreds of dollars on a pair of top-of-the-line running shoes, if you wear low-budget socks that cause your feet to sweat and blister.

All running socks available today use materials that are moisture-wicking to keep your feet dry while running and that prevents blisters while you are running.

There are even running socks available that are primarily made of anti-blister materials that are designed to prevent blisters while running

Popular fitness brands like NikeAdidasReebok, and Lululemon have great running socks that will help your feet stay dry and blister-free while running.

Listening to your favorite podcast, audiobook, or songs while running can make a long run feel short.

But to enjoy your playlist while running, an important piece of running gear that everyone should have is a great quality set of running headphones.

When shopping for the right pair of wireless headphones or earbuds, you should pay attention to the following:

The perfect fit – When you are choosing the right running headphones for you, making sure they fit while running is extremely important.

There is nothing like running with an expensive pair of Apple Airpod Pro’s or Bose QuietComfort Earbuds and having them constantly falling to the ground because they are not fitted properly in your ears.

If you are looking for stability while running, look for headphones that have over-the-ear hooks on them like the Beats PowerBeats Pro or Bose Soundsport to provide a secure fit around the ears.

Features – The next thing to look at when shopping for a pair of wireless headphones is a water resistance rating. When you are running outdoors your running headphones must handle sweat and rain

Also, another feature to look for is a set of running wireless headphones that have great battery life.

When it comes to running gear, there is nothing like being halfway through a 10K run and having the batteries on your headphones die, and you are left with listening to your feet hitting the pavement for the remaining 5k run.

Running Belt

Running Gear

When it comes to running outdoors, there are a few things that you will need to bring along with you besides your headphones, and that is your keysphone, and some energy gels

While you could put them in your pockets, but who wants to be weighed down with these necessary items. That’s why running with a running belt is an essential piece of running gear that all runners should have.

But, if you are planning on running with a running belt, here are some things to look for when shopping for the right running belt to add to your running gear:

Size of the running belt: If you are planning on carrying keyssmartphone, and energy gels conveniently, you should also look for a running belt that you can adjust tightly against your back to minimize movement when running.

Easy Access: When you are running, especially when you are pushing yourself towards a personal best, shop for a belt that makes it easy to get at your energy gels or possible water bottle

Brands like Osprey and Lululemon have a great selection of lightweight, sleek belts to hold your running gear essentials.

Smartphone Running Armband

If running belts aren’t your thing, how else are you going to hold your smartphone that is streaming your music or podcast to your wireless earbuds?

This is when a great running armband comes into play. With a great armband, your smartphone close to your body without possibly chafing, shifting, or bouncing around compared to a running belt.

Features to look for when in a running armband are a clear window that ensures you can still use your touch screen when you’re on the move, and comfortable padding to keep the armband comfortable and in place through your most strenuous race.

Popular running armbands from LifeProofTuneBand, and Armpocket will help keep your smartphone secure and comfortable for any type of run.

Running Backpacks

Running belts and fanny packs are great for carrying small running gear essentials, but what if you need something bigger to carry more substantial items for your journey?

Running backpacks are perfect for when you enjoy running to work or long runs and you need to keep essential supplies that won’t fit in a running belt or fanny pack.

The great thing about running bags is that they have adjustable straps to prevent them from bouncing around while you run.

Plus, running backpacks have pockets in convenient places to grab things on the move, as well as ventilation to prevent your back from getting too sweaty.

Things to look for when shopping for a new running backpack:

Sizing – When shopping for a running backpack for your running gear, you need to figure out how you are going to use the backpack.

If you are planning to use the running pack for runs in which you need to pack drinks, snacks, and some running accessories a five to ten-liter backpack will do just fine.

Great running backpacks in this category are the OMM Phantom that is lightweight and waterproof or the extremely light Osprey Rev packs that have an integrated water pack.

If you are thinking of purchasing a running backpack for carrying work clothes, a laptop, and other accessories, you might need to think about a larger running backpack like a 15 to 25-liter bag.

Osprey and North Face both offer great large running backpacks that have massive compartments with interior organization, and some external pockets for extras you may need to access quickly.

Some running backpacks fit different upper body types, so it might be worth trying a few on at your local sporting goods store to find the most comfortable for your body shape.

Features – When you are running you are going to need plenty of water to stay hydrated during your run, so look for a backpack that has accessible water bottle holders.

Another feature to keep in mind while shopping for the right running backpack is ventilation. Look for backpacks that have mesh panels on the rucksack itself to avoid back sweat while you run.

Running Water Bottles

Staying hydrated while you run is extremely important.

Hydration as a runner is important for a runner’s health and performance. Water controls our body’s temperature, eliminates waste, promotes energy to our cells, and cushions our joints.

Enough hydration can enhance recovery, reduce injury and cramping, and maximize performance.

If you are looking into longer runs for cardio training, you will need to have water on hand to replenish your water levels mid-run. That’s where adding to your running gear, great running water bottles, will help you make carrying water less of a hassle than you might think.

When shopping for the right water bottle for running, you need to figure out what size of water bottle you are comfortable running with, and the features of the water bottle that can help you stay hydrated while running.

Size – Running water bottles range from 200ml for handheld water bottles and up to 1 liter.

Features – If you want to keep your water cool while running, you may want to think about a BPA-free metal water bottle

If you are looking for a convenient water bottle that fits in the palm of your hand, Osprey makes a handheld soft flask that is strapped to your hand for easy access.

Running Reflective Gear

running gear

Many of us may not be able to run during daylight due to times of the year, or work schedules, and have to get in a good run when it’s dark.

The problem with night running is it sometimes can be dangerous due to not being seen by motorists while running on the streets or sidewalks.

That’s why night runners need to wear reflective running gear that will make you light up like a Christmas tree when headlights hit you.

While most running gear available today offer some kind of reflective material to them, it’s important to make sure that it’s not only the logo on your clothing that is reflective.

Also, when it comes to night running, it is oftentimes cooler in temperatures compared to daytime running, so much sure that your reflective gear will keep you warm but not sweaty while you run.

Popular fitness brands like NikeAdidasReebok, and Lululemon have great reflective running gear that will help you stay dry, warm, and extremely visible while running.

Running Jacket or Vest

running vest

You might think that running with a jacket or vest might be overkill while running, but it’s a great piece of running gear that you should have on hand at all times

Sure that the essential running gear items like shoes, t-shirts, shorts, socks, and underwear are needed for every run, but a running jacket or vest(gilet) offers protection in every weather condition.

Most running jackets and running vests are generally made of windproof and water-resistant material. This means that they can help keep your core warm and dry without overheating you while you run.

You can use a running vest or jacket over a t-shirt for runs in cooler windy conditions, and being packable in design, you can store them into a pocket on your shorts, backpack, or jacket to have an extra layer to hand just in case.

Popular fitness brands like NikeAdidasReebok, and Lululemon have fantastic running jackets and vests that will help you stay dry and warm when you need it the most.

Running Bras

Running gear

When it comes to running gear, staying comfortable while running is extremely important. This is the case with your bra, which needs to provide the support you need without being unbearably tight around the chest.

If you are looking for the right sports bra for your running gear, you should look for a high level of support for running.

Finding the right size – The common types of running bras available today are compression bras that flatten the breasts and encapsulation bras that have separate cups for each breast.

Larger-breasted runners will need to look at encapsulation bras for comfort because compression bras don’t provide enough support while running.

If you are looking for a high support sports bra, the Sweaty Betty sports bra features mesh inserts and encapsulation technology, this is the ultimate way to combine high-performance with fashion details.

The supportive design is crafted from sweat-wicking fabric and has softly padded straps that sit comfortably against the skin.

Wear for high support whether you’re an A or F cup, it’s time to stop the drop.

Another highly supportive sports bra to look at is the form-fitting Nike Alpha High Support Sports Bra that features molded cups for an encapsulated fit.

Designed for high-impact activities like basketball and soccer, it offers a modified racerback design for a natural range of motion.

Lululemon Run Times Bra High Support Sleek Bra is another popular running that gives support, separation, and coverage, with perforated paneling for airflow.

Running Leggings

Running Leggings

Leggings are no longer associated as great running gear for women as many popular fitness brands are making great leggings for men to wear on a run.

Leggings are perfect for keeping you comfortable on warm or cold days.

The key to perfect leggings for running is finding the perfect fit

Whether you decided on full or 3/4 length tights, make sure that they are not loose that could cause chaffing during a run, or too tight that the leggings become too restrictive.

Keep in mind that if you are looking at compression leggings, designed to be tighter, do not hinder your running style at all.

Also, when looking for the perfect pair of leggings for your running gear, make sure that the leggings are made of moisture-wicking material to wick sweat away and dry fast

Another key feature to look for is leggings with anti-odor properties built-in for days when you don’t want to do laundry, as well as leggings with zip pockets for keys, a bank card, and gels.

Popular fitness brands like NikeAdidasReebok, and Lululemon have fantastic leggings that will help you stay dry and warm when you need it the most.

Running Shorts

running gear

Having a great quality pair of shorts for running in the summer, or even in the cold fall/winter months, is a must for your running gear.

When you are choosing your running shorts pay attention to the fit of the shorts you want. Most of the popular running short styles are loose or compression.

Loose-fit shorts are great for summer runs because they feel less restrictive compared to compression shorts that help minizine chafing and support your muscles but fit tight to the body.

When it comes to features, look for moisture-wicking fabric, and possible pockets with a zipper for your keys and id.

Side note: If you are preparing for a distance run like a half or full marathon, make sure you test a new pair of running shorts a few weeks ahead to ensure that your shorts don’t cause chaffing on long runs.

Popular fitness brands like NikeAdidasReebok, and Lululemon have fantastic shorts for women & men that will help you stay dry and warm when you need them the most.

Running Tops

running gear

Regardless of the weather, we all need a comfortable shirt to run in. For summer runs, a tank top or a t-shirt will do just fine, and for cooler months, a long-sleeved top will help keep you warm.

The key to a great running shirt is to make sure that it fits properly. You never want a baggy shirt because it causes more drag which slows you down. This is not a good thing in timed runs.

If you often run at night, wear a long sleeve shirt with a zipper that helps you cool down when you begin to heat up during your run.

For t-shirts and tank tops, you want a shirt that can regulate your body temperature and draw moisture away from your skin, and tight enough to avoid nipple chafing

I have learned my lesson of wearing loose cotton on half marathon runs, as this material isn’t the best for your nipples. If you like cotton, wear waterproof band-aids or use Body Glide anti-chafe balm pre-run to avoid chaffing during your run.

Popular fitness brands like NikeAdidasReebok, and Lululemon have fantastic long and short sleeve shirts for women & men that will help you stay dry and warm when you need them the most.

Running Gloves

running gear

Not exactly the type of running gear that many runners don’t use on a treadmill or outside in the spring, summer, and early fall conditions, but when the temperature changes outside, they are a blessing.

If you are looking for gloves to keep your hands warm in the chilly mornings, think about getting yourself a pair of gloves with liners built-in.

When I go out for an early run on a late fall morning, the gloves I tend to equip myself with are ones with merino liners in them

Why? because merino provides natural moisture-wicking as well as odor-resisting properties that keep your hands dry and stink-free.

Merino wool is also a great fabric for socks as well because of the sweat-wicking properties. Perfect for everyone’s running gear essentials.

Popular fitness brands like NikeAdidasReebok, and Lululemon have fantastic running gloves for women & men that will help you stay dry and warm when you need them the most.

After Run Recovery

running gear

Sure many of us would love to head to an RMT(Registered Massage Therapy) after our runs, but due to many reasons like budget and health concerns, this is not possible.

But how can you help your muscles and joints to recover after a run?

Well, the good news is that several incredible running gear accessories can aid in recovery for your next run.

Here are my picks on running gear recovery products to help your body restore and recharge:

BCAA – branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) are important for rebuilding your muscles post-training, the problem is that your body can’t produce them naturally

That’s why it’s important to supplement your diet with BCAAs after a great run.

Foam Roller – A foam roller is perfect to massage your body to allow your body to recover after running.

self-massage with a foam roller can temporarily increase the range of motion and alleviate muscle soreness over a few days.

To use it, you slowly roll an area of your body — like your upper back, hips, or calves — back and forth across the top of the roller.

Deep Tissue Muscle Massager – deep tissue muscle massager allows for concentrated pressure into muscle tissue.

This form of deep tissue massage can reduce muscle tension while improving blood flow and quickly increasing the range of motion.

No matter how you run, whether your a beginner just trying to get into the best shape of your life, or a seasoned runner training for distance, these great running gear options available online will get you ready.

Running is a great form of exercise to help you build strong bones, strengthen muscle, improve cardiovascular fitness, and help maintain a healthy weight.

So, just get out there and start your journey in getting into the best shape of your life.
