Spread the love

Are you in the market for an action camera, and not sure to buy the GoPro Hero 8 Black or the DJI Osmo Action camera? I was struggling with the same issue a few months ago.

After testing out both action cameras over the past few months, I have decided to do a head-to-head review to help you figure out which action camera is best on the market today.

DJI Osmo Action vs GoPro Hero 8: Which Is The Best Action Camera?

Don’t you hate when you parkouring over a crevasse? To imagine you drop your camera into the ocean below that is filled with sharks with laser beams attached to their heads could ruin a great holiday.

I know I do. Mind you that was in a dream, but it still felt real. In my dream I was holding a smartphone, but what if I had either a GoPro Hero 8 or a DJI Osmo Action Camera?

If you are in the market for the perfect action camera but confused on what action camera to buy to get that perfect picture as you are fighting off a three-headed dragon, you are not alone.

When it comes to the GoPro Hero 8 and the DJI Osmo Action Camera, they both are the best action cameras on the market today. But the deciding factor when buying the right action camera for you, it depends on your budget and how you are going to use these action cameras in the real world.

In the past, GoPro’s were the action camera of choice for any adventurist wanting to get the best pictures or videos on the go.

With 4k video footage and incredible image stabilization, there was nothing on the market to compete with GoPro. Until the DJI Osmo Action Camera came along and ruined things for GoPro.

The DJI brand is known for the best drones on the market today as well as the best pro-level camera stabilizers out there, adding a 4k action camera to its portfolio seemed like a no brainer. (Click Here For My Review On DJI Products.)

But, since the DJI Osmo Action Camera the new kid on the block, does it compete with GoPro’s functionality that many outdoor enthusiasts crave? Read more to find out.

Who has the edge? The GoPro Hero 8 Black by a slim margin.

DJI Osmo Action vs GoPro Hero 8: The Design Comparison

If you are familiar with the GoPro products, it has the same design look as its predecessors, but with may electronics on the market today going slimmer and lighter, the Hero 8 Black followed the trend.

While the DJI Osmo Action Camera is a tight little package, the camera lens is more prominent and sticks out there for all to see compared to the GoPro.

Plus, with the non-slip rubberized feel of the GoPro’s body compared to the plasticky feel of the DJI Osmo Action Camera, you feel more confident with the GoPro compared to the Osmo if drop it on the ground knowing that it might survive.

DJI Osmo Action vs GoPro Hero 8: USABILITY Comparison

With GoPro being in the market for quite some time, there are quite a few accessories like that work well with GoPro compared to the new kid on the block DJI Osmo Action Camera

But, a feature that the DJI Osmo Action Camera has that the GoPro doesn’t is a built-in front-facing 1.4inch (3.56 cm) screen. This screen is perfect for vloggers who want the perfect framing while talking to the camera.

Mind you, even though the GoPro Hero 8 Black doesn’t offer this built-in feature, there is an add-on flip-screen accessory that can be attached to the GoPro that will offer the same thing, but it will cost you money for this.

So when you factor the add-on cost of adding a front-facing screen on the GoPro vs an already built-in feature on the DJI Osmo Action Camera, I would say that DJI comes out ahead in this department.

Each camera has its own dedicated app, via which you can control the camera from your device, edit your stills and footage, live stream, and share your content.

When it comes to the navigation menus on both the GoPro Hero 8 Black and the DJI Osmo Action Camerathey are very similar in ease of use with the touchscreens on both action cameras

So, the winner will have to be decided by you, unfortunately, because what I might think is an easy to use the navigation system on one, might be harder for others.

DJI Osmo Action vs GoPro Hero 8: Footage Comparison

With the capability to shoot 4K60fps, both the DJI Osmo and the GoPro Hero 8 offers incredibly sharp video footage

If you are looking to shoot at a full-frame ratio of 4:3, the GoPro can record 4k 60fps video footage at this ratio, while the DJI Osmo will only record at 30fps.

For me, this difference doesn’t matter to me as I like shooting for a 16:9 ratio which is standard with most TVs on the market today.

Since these two action cameras are the best in the market today, they both can achieve the look that you are looking for.

Plus, both of these cameras shoot at a frame rate of 24fps at 1080p, for those looking for smaller file sizes to upload to Youtube or Vimeo without sacrificing image quality.

A feature I love that both of these great action cameras have is the time-lapse mode. This mode allows you to produce static videos captured with the shutter shot at chosen periods over time.

But, the clear winner in the time-laps department is the GoPro in which its TimeWarp 2.0 feature which is HyperSmooth applied to TimeLapse Video.

It allows you to capture super stabilized time-lapse videos while you move about a scene. Increase the speed up to 30x to turn longer activities into shareable moments.

As for taking photos both of thee cameras don’t disappoint.

You can take single or burst shots with either camera, but with GoPro’s Live burst which records 1.5 seconds before and after you press the capture button, has the edge of the DJI Osmo.

As for lenses, both of these cameras offer a variety of digital lenses to pick from.

But, GoPro’s Superview lens which has the widest angle for shooting capabilities that is perfect for taking amazing panoramic photographs has the edge of the DJI Osmo.

DJI Osmo Action vs GoPro Hero 8: STABILISATION Comparison

When the GoPro Hero 7 Black was introduced, it was built with an amazing feature call the HyperSmooth stabilization

Since the GoPro Hero 8 Black is the big brother to the GoPro Hero 7, obviously, the Hypersmooth Stabilization improved even more.

With the introduction of GoPro Hero Black 8’s HyperSmooth 2.0, stabilization is now accessible form every video resolution and frame-rate.

Plus, you can increase the level of stabilization even further by running it in High and Boost modes.

The DJI Osmo Action is no slouch in comparison with its own amazing RockSteady stabilizationThe RockSteady stabilization delivers on stabilization, but it can only handle frame rates up to 4K30fps.

So, if you are looking to push your videos to the max at 4K60fps, then the GoPro Hero 8 Black is the right choice.

If you are in the market for an incredible action camera that will take amazing 4K video footage, and incredible pictures as well, both cameras will not disappoint you.

While I do like the front display feature of the DJI Osmo Action for vlogging, and the Rocksteady feature for stabilization is top of the class, it is clearly no match of the options and features that the  GoPro Hero 8 Black can do.

Everything from the rugged feel to the amazing Hypersmooth 2.0 technology, there is nothing that can compete on the action camera market to the  GoPro Hero 8 Black.

But, keep in mind all of these incredible features that GoPro delivers comes at a cost. When the GoPro Hero 8 Black was introduced, the average price was around $350.00 USD compared to the DJI Osmo Action at around $250.00 USD

So, if you are in the market today for a great action camera on a limited budget, the DJI Osmo Action Camera will deliver the results you can expect from an action camera.

But, if you are willing to spend a few extra dollars on an action camera, then buy the GoPro Hero 8 Black because you won’t be disappointed.

Overall winner: GoPro Hero 8 Black
