Keto Diet – What is the Keto Diet? Why is this diet so popular? What is the easiest way to start the keto diet?

These are the questions that I had when I started to research for a new diet to shed the travel weight I have gained over the past year. I found out too many In-N-Out Burgers over the past year can be a bad thing.

Through my research, I started understanding what the ketogenic diet is. I know this is a popular diet trend right now.

Many dieters are jumping on the Keto diet bandwagon, and I wanted to make this post help explain the keto diet easy enough for anyone to start

Keto Diet – What is it?

The Keto Diet seems to be everywhere lately in the News, Pinterest, Instagram, etc. and it is the most popular diet right now.

If you don’t know what the Ketogenic diet is, here is an easy breakdown of the Keto Diet.

Ketogenic, or keto diet is primarily an extremely low carb and high-fat diet. The keto diet is quite similar to the Atkins diet, but the approach to the diet is different. 

With the keto diet, you will be reducing your carbohydrates dramatically and replacing them with healthy fats.

Typically, a keto diet contains less than 20g carbohydrates per day, supplemented with protein and nutritious fats.

By following those simple rules, your body will be placed in a metabolic state called ketosis. When your body is in ketosis, it becomes more efficient at burning fat.

The great thing about the Keto Diet is it stabilizes the body’s sugar levels, therefore decreasing the insulin demand from the body.

If you are consuming enough healthy fats, you will be able to keep your hunger under control. 

How? Healthy fats keep you feeling full for a longer period of time because of all the fat-soluble vitamins like Vitamin A, D, E, and K. These vitamins tend to be forgotten on other low-fat diets.

If you are on a low-fat, and low-calorie diet, you will be hangry all the time and extremely edgy all day.

Low-fat and low-calorie diets are unfocused on keeping you feeling full throughout the day. 

But, if you increase your healthy fat content, you will stay full throughout the day. 

Acceptable Food Choices On The Keto Diet

With the diet being a healthy high-fat diet, you will need to focus on foods that have enough healthy fats to keep you feeling full throughout the day.

Below are a combination of high-protein and low-carbohydrate foods that can be consumed on the diet.

  • Fish
  • Cheese
  • Nuts and seeds (limited quantities)
  • Eggs
  • Low-starch veggies
  • Healthy fats and oils
  • Meats

Foods To Avoid On The Keto Diet:

  • Grains and starchy foods
  • Diet foods/fake foods
  • Fruits
  • Root vegetables
  • Beans
  • Sugar, sugary foods and drinks

There are many reasons why many dieters follow this diet program, and here are some examples of why you should as well:

  • The ability to maintain stable blood sugar levels. (which is important for all forms of diabetes)

  • Controls your appetite
  • Helps improve cardiovascular risks

“The Chaffle”

When it comes to diet changes and finding meals that you can create that taste great, there are several out there that I have not uncovered yet. 

My new favorite breakfast dish on the Keto Diet is “The Chaffle”—a Keto waffle made of only cheese and eggs.

How do you make a Chaffle?

A simple Chaffle is made with just two ingredients: 1 large egg and 1/2 cup of shredded mozzarella.

You whisk the egg, stir in the cheese, and place half the batter in a mini waffle maker for 2-3 minutes. Repeat with the remaining batter.

They are crispy just like a normal waffle, all you have to do is just let them sit in the waffle maker for a minute or two before removing them from the waffle maker.

Then serve them up with a dab of butter, and sugar-free syrup, and eat. YUM!!!

Side Effects Of The Ketogenic Diet

Now I want to preface this by saying I am not a doctor, even though I might play one on TV, that doesn’t count.

It is extremely important to have a conversation with your doctor in terms of any diet or lifestyle changes, or if you have any health issues that are too embarrassing to talk to your friends about.

Keep in mind when it comes to the keto diet, it is a very safe diet that works extremely well for many, some side effects will happen as your body adapts to the lifestyle change.

One of the big side effects of the keto diet is the so-called “keto flu.”

What is the ” Keto Flu?” It’s the feeling you get at the start of the keto diet, that causes you to feel sluggish, have a lack of focus, and other problems that come with this diet change.

To cope with these feelings as your body becomes accustomed to the diet you need to make sure that you stay hydrated and maintain a normal balance of minerals like potassium, sodium, and magnesium.

If you introduce salt into your diet at the beginning, by sprinkling some salt in your food or drinking electrolyte drinks like Gatorade, you can minimize the effects of the keto flu. 

The Keto Diet Explained Easy – Summary

A Keto Diet is a great diet for many reasons one of them is the health benefits it provides.

To follow this diet, all you have to remember is to eat a low-carb diet with a moderate amount of protein and healthy fats to keep you full throughout the day.

If you stick to the diet for some time, you will find out that this diet is easy to follow and you will begin to feel the health benefits because of it. #keto
