What Are Adjustable Dumbbells?
Adjustable dumbbells are a single pair of dumbbells, in which the weights can be adjusted depending on whether the user wants the dumbbells to be heavy or light for a strength training workout.
Adjustable dumbbells come with max and minimum weight increments, which depends on the brand and model you choose.
Why Choose Adjustable Dumbbells Over Standard Dumbbells?
If you look at a standard dumbbell, it usually is a short bar with a set weight on each end. They are great for a fitness center where they have dumbbells racks in which you can store the standard dumbbells on, but who has space in a home gym?
When you look at adjustable dumbbells, they allow you to change how heavy you want to lift through moving a lever or pin.
If you are in the process of building or upgrading a home gym, adjustable dumbbells are the perfect replacement for the standard dumbbell, as they replace multiple sets of dumbbells.
How Does An Adjustable Dumbbell Work?
Are Adjustable Dumbbells Easy To Use?
As you can see from the clip above, I get that it’s a commercial that is trying hard to sell the product, there is a bit of a learning curve at the beginning.
When I was testing out some of the Adjustable Dumbbells reviewed below, they do take some getting used to if you only have been working out with standard dumbbells all your life.
When it comes to Adjustable Dumbbells, the weights on the dumbbells are distributed differently compared to strand dumbbells. Plus, all makes of adjustable dumbbells weights are distributed differently, depending on the brand and design.
Adjusting the weight can take some practice to do properly with some adjustable dumbbells. As a result, workouts that need different weights in a quick sequence can be cumbersome.
If you look at a drop set where you go from lifting heavy till you are fatigued, and then drop a percentage of weight and continue to lift till you are more fatigued, it would require you to stop between sets and adjust the weights.
This adjustment takes time and interrupts the progress of your workout.
But with practice over time, and if you purchase a great pair of adjustable dumbbells from the suggestions below, it won’t be an issue.

Amazon Review: “I was a little nervous about purchasing these due to some of the reviews cautioning about fragility and size, but I knew I wanted adjustable dumbbells as I don’t have room at home for a weight rack. How would I wrangle them? Well, I’m here to say these dumbbells are PERFECT. I didn’t have to worry. First, they were packed insanely well. Second, for me, they are very easy to adjust and use. Using the dials is easy and using the weights is no problem. The dumbbell length does not inhibit me in any way. It’s thrilling to have such a range of weight in a compact form. I would caution about putting the weights back into the base when done. Just be careful is all. These, as others have said, are probably not weights to throw around. This is one of the best investments I’ve made. Thanks, Bowflex!”
2nd Best Overall Adjustable Dumbbell
Core Fitness Adjustable Dumbbell Weight Set by Affordable Dumbbells
Quick & Easy Weight Change. With just a turn of your wrist, you can change your weight setting. It can change between 5 to 50 lbs instantly.
Feels Just Like A Normal Dumbbell. The TwistLock Technology provides you with a natural dumbbell feel. There is no large clunky handle and permanent support system. As you go down in weight the dumbbell gets smaller in size thanks to the interior rod locking system.
Saves Money & Space. With weights ranging from 5 to 50 lbs, our dumbbells give you an entire 10-piece set in a single dumbbell – all with durable construction and a modern, lightweight aluminum cradle. It’s a great way to get a real workout with real results – all from smart, compact design.
Perfect for arm exercises such as dumbbells rows, dumbbell curls, incline dumbbell presses, dumbbell pullover, dumbbell deadlifts, dumbbell flyes, dumbbell bench press, and lateral dumbbell raises.
Amazon Review: “The amount of space these save over a 5 to 50 lb set of dumbbells is huge, and the cost savings is also huge. I also really like the ergonomic and grippy but firm grips. The mechanism has worked quite well so far. I also like that these are not as long as some similar dumbbells. In terms of downsides, I can see how dropping one of these would probably not do it any good as some reviewers have said. Also, it is true that when you crank it up to above 40 lb, the dumbbell tends to stick in the cradle. My solution was to zip tie the cradles to milk crates. So, I’m quite content with these adjustable dumbbells, and I’m hoping for at least a few good years of use.”
The only dumbbell system that can expand to meet your strength needs, PowerBlock dumbbells are the most versatile and effective exercise tool ever developed for strength training. PowerBlocks work intuitively.
Rather than requiring you to buy a room full of dumbbells, PowerBlocks act just like a weight stack at the gym, with a weighted handle that fits inside the first weight, which fits inside the second, which fits inside the third, etc.
When you want to change weights, you simply move the weight selector pin into the appropriate slot and you’re set. As you lift the core, all the weights above the selector pin are lifted at the same time, turning your 3-pound dumbbell into a 6-pound dumbbell, or your 6-pound dumbbell into a 12-pound dumbbell.
Not only is the system remarkably easy to use, but it’s also cost- and space-efficient, as a single pair of dumbbells can do the work of dozens. This personal trainer set is a hybrid system that employs the weight stack from PowerBlock’s Personal Set and the handles of the Elite Set.
As a result, users can achieve every 2.5-pound jump within the weight range of 5 to 50 pounds per dumbbell, in effect doing the job of 40 individual weights. Even better, the weights are more compact and balanced than traditional dumbbells, with a padded handle that protects people with weak wrists.
Best of all, the free weights are terrific whether you’re trying to build muscle mass, firm and tone your physique, or get rid of unwanted body fat. The personal trainer set is not expandable and is compatible with the Elite/Pro-weight stand. It also carries a limited 10-year warranty.
- Adjusts from 5 to 50 pounds in 2.5-pound increments for maximum versatility. Replaces 20 pairs of dumbbells in the space of just 1 pair.
- Patented compact design keeps the workout area neat & organized.
- Selector pin lets you change weights easily, like a weight stack machine at the gym.
- Increments achieved: 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5, 15, 17.5, 20, 22.5, 25, 27.5, 30, 32.5, 35, 37.5, 40, 42.5, 45, 47.5 and 50 lbs per hand.
- Sold as pair and ships in 2 boxes.
Amazon Review: “They are great. They are a little bigger than a regular dumbbell but the multiple set up is worth every penny.
Picture attached. 20lb, 34.6lb, 35lb, and 50. I use both dumbbell and plate and really was not much of a difference. The quick change in weight is great. I would not recommend it if you are working out early or late where noise is a factor. The plates do make some noise. Close the door and you’ll be fine.”

Amazon Review: “The time has come to start working out. This dumbbell set is great. It goes from 2.5 kg up to 25 kg in 2.5 kg weight increments. It probably looks nicer incrementally to have them be kilograms rather than pounds, so I have accepted it. The directions are easy to follow. The button to change the setting is easy enough to push, but for safety, you need to push the button at the same time as rotating a dial. Both dial sides will rotate at once when one is rotated. Selected desired weight, remove finger from the button, and it is easy and safe enough to lift. A sturdy set of weights! Place it back in safely, and then what I like to is turn the dial to a heavy setting so it cannot be easily lifted straight out. 😉 With the button up, the weight is able to be lifted with that selection. The grip is nice. Weights themselves are well made. I love this set. Works for my husband as well as for me, so we are excited to have this workout tool!”

Amazon Review: “I have had my SelectTech 1090s for about a month now and I really like them. I love the ease of which I can go from say 20lbs to 60lbs. It’s smooth and easy to adjust. The range of weights you can adjust the dumbbells to really allows you to do many different exercises. It’s the main reason I purchased these over the 552s. I will say it’s a little wonky sometimes due to how wide each dumbbell is. Takes a little getting used to when using heavier weights. But nothing crazy once you find the center of gravity. And a few times I have had difficulty returning the weights to their stand/tray. This has only happened when using heavier weights (50lbs and above). I just had a little trouble lining up the weights to return to the tray. Could have been because I was tired also.”

Ironmaster 75 lb Quick-Lock Adjustable Dumbbell System with Stand
4.5 out of 5 Rating on Amazon.com
The Ironmaster 75 LB Quick-Lock Dumbbell Set is one of Ironmaster’s flagship products and a customer favorite for people looking for premium quality adjustable dumbbells.
The latest generation of this product includes a patented quick lock technology allowing you to adjust the weight of each dumbbell from 5 to 75lbs in 2.5 LB increments in less than 15 seconds! The system also includes the dumbbell stand.
Unparalleled Quality and Realistic Feeling Adjustable Dumbbells
Many adjustable dumbbells suffer from the same set of problems and annoyances. They are cheaply made causing them to break or become non-functioning after a short period of time.
Not only is this expensive, but it can also be extremely dangerous. People have reported competitors’ products releasing plates from the dumbbell and causing significant injuries. With Ironmaster, you do not have to worry about this.
These adjustable dumbbells look, feel, and function just like real dumbbells. They are solid and ready to go containing no plastic or fragile components.
Features of the 75lb Ironmaster Adjustable Dumbbells:
- Quick-Lock handle design lets you add or remove plates with just a partial turn of the locking screws! US Patent 7,182,716
- Adjust from 5-75 lbs each in 2.5 lb increments in just seconds. (75 lbs each dumbbell = 150 lbs total)
- Set includes two handles with four locking screws, 24 ea. 5 lb plates and 4 ea. 2.5 lb plates. Handles weigh 5 lbs empty and each locking screw weighs 2.5 lbs so the starting weight is 10 lbs each adjustable dumbbell before plates are added. 65 lbs of plates can be loaded on each handle.
- The included Stand is very strong and compact. Dimensions are just 14.5″ wide x 19″ deep x 26″ high with rubber leveling feet. The Stand will also hold the 120 lb Add on Kit.
- These adjustable dumbbells lock up tight with no rattling or looseness. They feel just like traditional fixed weight dumbbells and are not restrictive in the ways you can grip them.
- Chrome-plated steel handles with knurled grips.
- Heavy Duty – go ahead and drop them. No plastic or fragile parts!
- Lifetime warranty!
- Add-on kit available to go up to 120 lbs each adjustable dumbbell or even a custom Add-on-kit to 165 lbs.
- Dumbbell dimensions are just 6.7″ square x 14.5″ long at the 75lb size and just 9″ long at 20lbs size. Handle grip diameter is 1.25″ and there is 6.5″ grip width inside.
- The weight plates are marked in both LBS and KGS.
Amazon Review: “Hands down the best adjustable dumbbell I’ve come across for a few reasons.
- They feel like a pre-fab dumbbell (I like the Powerblocks and Bowflex, but both of them are a little awkward between the Bowflex having gaps between plates and the Powerblock putting your hand in a cage)
- They extend up to 165lbs
- There is NO wiggle when locked into place
- The engineering of having the plates fit into each other before the lock screw is in place makes it super quick and easy to shift the weight around
All-in-all to say I’m impressed by these things would be an understatement. I cannot recommend them highly enough!”
So Which Adjustable Dumbbell Is Right For You?
Since the self-isolation started back in March 2020, I was able to get my hands on a set of Bowflex SelectTech 552‘s on sale at the local fitness depot near me. I have had Power Block Adjustable Elite Dumbbells in the past which I still use when I really want to a great cross-training workout that involves all the dumbbells in my home gym.
The only reason for the switch from the Power Blocks to the Bowflex SelectTech 552‘s is because they were awkward for my wife to use, and the Bowflex grips were easier for her to handle.
The only concern I have with the Bowflex SelectTech 552‘s is that it’s mostly plastic design. Now I am very cautious with all of my gym equipment in my house, but for those who love dropping weights during a workout, they won’t last long.
With the Bowflex SelectTech 552‘s when working out with, I did notice that the plates of the dumbbells tend to wobble more compared to the Power Block Adjustable Elite Dumbbells. It’s not really a big thing for me, but for those who like the solid feel of a standard dumbbell, you might have an issue with it.
As for the grips in the Bowflex Adjustable Dumbbells, they are very comfortable and make it easy to hold onto the dumbbells.
Now, if you are looking for an Adjustable Dumbbell that offers heavier weight, then I would go and get either the Ironmaster Adjustable dumbbells, the Bowflex SelectTech 1090 Adjustable Dumbbells, or the ATIVAFIT Adjustable Dumbbell.
I have tried out the Ironmasters Adjustable Dumbbells recently, and they are an entirely different level of product (but they come at a different level of price as well). The Ironmasters come with a lifetime warranty and when you adjust them tightly they feel like a solid dumbbell.
Where they fall behind the 552’s is in the ease of adjusting the weight. To adjust two Ironmasters dumbbells it took around 45 seconds vs the same adjustment on the 552’s take about 5 seconds.
But, when it comes down to it, it all depends on personal preference. Do you want a solid adjustable dumbbell? Then go with either the Ironmaster or the Power Block Adjustable Elite Dumbbells. If you are looking for ease of use and a price point that you can afford, then I would go with the Bowflex SelectTech‘s, ATIVAFIT Adjustable Dumbbell, or the Core Home Fitness Adjustable Dumbbell Set.
At the time of posting this, it seems that fitness equipment manufacturers are low on stock on everything. I guess the pandemic caused people to workout at home.
If you are on a look out for adjustable dumbbells are any other fitness equipment, I would suggest the following sites if the links I mention are out of stock:
