What Other Gear Do You Need for Mobile Filmmaking?

A gimbal transforms your phone into a stabilized camera. But to actually make pro-quality content, you need a few more pieces.

External Microphones (Non-Negotiable)

Your phone’s mic is garbage. I don’t care how expensive your phone was—the built-in mic picks up wind, handling noise, that weird rustling from your jacket, and makes every interview sound like you’re in a tunnel.

What You Actually Need:

Lavalier Mic for Interviews: Rode Wireless GO II is the gold standard. Small, reliable, decent audio. Clip it on your subject, forget it exists, get clean dialogue. Used this for all the interview scenes in Going Home.

Shotgun Mic for Directional Sound: Rode VideoMic Me-C (USB-C) or VideoMic Me-L (Lightning). Plugs directly into your phone. Focuses sound forward, rejects noise from the sides. Perfect for vlogging or documentary-style shooting.

Why It Matters: Audio quality is 50% of perceived video quality. Viewers will tolerate mediocre video if the audio is clean. They’ll immediately click away from beautiful video with terrible audio.

Wide-Angle & Anamorphic Lenses

Phone lenses are getting better, but they’re still limited.

Some of the best shots in Going Home came from extreme angles that would’ve been impossible handheld.

Clean Your Gimbal (Boring But Essential)

Dirt and dust in the motors = degraded performance and shorter lifespan. Wipe down after dusty shoots. Occasionally blow out the motor housings with compressed air.

I’ve seen $400 gimbals die early because people never maintained them.

Yes. The OM 8 handles the iPhone 17 Pro Max (240g bare, ~290g with case) comfortably. Confirmed compatible with Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra and Google Pixel 10 Pro as well.

However: If you’re adding external lenses (Moment Anamorphic adds 60g) and a microphone, you’re pushing toward the 350g range. At that point, consider the Hohem iSteady M7 with its 500g payload capacity.
