Do you enjoy camping but lament the fact that you miss out on the conveniences of home? Are you planning a staycation this year to avoid having to go outside of your city? If you enjoy camping and are considering a staycation, why not bring camping to your backyard in your own unique style?

However, if you want to have the finest vacay ever, you should add some glitz to your backyard camping. Glamping is a term that has been thrown around in the camping world for years, and if you don’t know what it means, it will forever transform the way you think about camping.

With the recent self-isolation practices that many of us have been experiencing, the thought of taking a vacation has become a pipe dream that we don’t know when we’ll be able to realize. I had been pent up in my house for the last month and needed a sanity break from the living room and bedroom, so I decided to experience the outdoors in the safest way possible by sleeping beneath the stars in my own backyard.

If you’re lucky enough to have a backyard like me and want to make the most of it by building a staycation spot that will make your neighbors envious, this post will show you how to create the best glamping experience you can have without getting in a car.

Camping Vs. Glamping

What distinguishes camping from glamping is the level of comfort you are ready to accept when camping outside. It all boils down to how rough you’re willing to be while camping.

Sure, compared to a campground, you’ll have the conveniences of running water, an indoor toilet with toilet paper, and a stove that doesn’t require wood or matches to cook on.

Regardless, if you’re simply setting up a tent in your backyard and sleeping there overnight, you can do so in your bedroom with the window open. However, if you truly want to take your backyard camping to the next level, you must think outside the box and design your own one-of-a-kind outdoor experience now.

What Does It Take To Create A Glamping Site In Your Backyard

When it comes to DIY backyard glamping, all it takes is adding a pleasant tent, cozy bed, and some additional touches like a modern rug, a string of tealights, an elegant table, and chairs, and you are ready for backyard camping “Glamping Style.

Here are some ideas to glamorize your backyard for the best campsite in your neighborhood.

Backyard - Tent

glamping guide

Having a permanent luxury yurt in your backyard would be a dream come true if you want to glamp in style. The disadvantage of a yurt is that it is not moveable and takes up a lot of room.

A bell tent is a terrific alternative to a yurt that is quicker to set up and take down while still providing the yurt feel for the ultimate glamping experience.
What is a Bell Tent, exactly? When compared to the typical tent that many campers use for campground camping, a bell tent provides a more luxurious camping experience.

A bell tent is a circular canvas tent with a central support pole. Tension from guy ropes around the outside creates its bell-like shape. A Bell Tent is visually appealing, and because they are stand-up tents, you have the freedom to wander around the tent and put on your pants without having to lie down.

Now is the time to go outside the box and create your own one-of-a-kind outdoor experience.

Here are some wonderful bell tents to think about for your backyard camping trip:

Backyard Glamping - Sleeping

If you’re planning to set up a glamping site in your backyard for your staycation, you’ll need to build a luxurious bed for a restful night’s sleep.

When it comes to a bed for your backyard bell tent, you want something that is practically as good as the bed you have at home so you can sleep outside.

When designing a glamping bed for your backyard camping, consider the following aspects for a restful night’s sleep:

Gel Mattress

Gel Mattress

To begin, consider a gel mattress, which adapts to your body while you sleep but does not collect heat like other mattress materials.

When I go camping during the hot summer months, I prefer a gel mattress because I never wake up in a pool of perspiration. After all, the gel keeps me cool at night.

Memory Foam Mattress

Memory Foam Mattress

Second, a Memory Foam mattress adheres to the body in the same way as gel does, but it keeps your body warm while you sleep.

Memory Foam mattresses appeal to me since they are less bulky than traditional mattresses, making them easier to store during non-camping months.

Air Bed

Air Bed

You can also opt for an Air Bed, which is more portable and less expensive than a gel or memory foam bed, but they are more prone to puncture.

An air bed is ideal not just for your backyard glamping site, but also for when you have extra overnight visitors that may visit throughout the year.

The puncturing issue is my sole gripe about air beds. I usually manage to have a leak with these during the night, which makes for an embarrassing late-night wake-up call when you discover the air is gone and you’re sleeping on the ground.

Cozy Bedding

Cozy Bedding

After you’ve sorted out your mattress, the next step in creating a comfortable glamping camp in your backyard is to add soft sheets, a blanket, and soft pillows.

Personally, I prefer Egyptian cotton since it offers me a pleasant feeling as I climb into bed. However, when it comes to bedding, it all comes down to personal style and what you already have.

You may already have comforters and pillows in your home. As a result, there is no need to spend money on this. However, if you require excellent bedding, I recommend visiting Bed, Bath & Beyond or Walmart online.

Don’t forget to bring a hammock to your glamping destination! They’re ideal for a nap in the middle of the day.

Backyard Glamping - Lounging

Whether you’re going camping or simply sitting about in your backyard, you’ll need some furniture to relax on.

Make sure you have enough tables, chairs, and a sun umbrella available, whether you want an aristocratic seating area or a more modern design for your patio garden.

Bed, Bath & Beyond and Walmart both have some wonderful options for filling out your patio area for a low price.

glamping

A firepit is a must-have for every camping lounging area.

While no one wants to dig a hole in their backyard to build a wood fire pit, there are some wonderful portable wood-burning and gas-burning fire pit choices that can provide you with the same campfire experience without the digging.

Plus, with a gas-fire pit, you can control the strength of the flame and avoid scorching anything nearby.

Backyard Camping - Accessories

Patio Lights

Patio Lights

Adding some low-key string lights to your backyard camp, whether you’re glamping in your backyard and enjoying nighttime cocktails or having a summer BBQ, is a wonderful aesthetic addition to your private backyard camp.

With a few strands of string lights, you can create the ideal patio dining place for summer supper gatherings. Alternatively, place candles on the table for an outdoor candlelight glow.

These amazing online merchants have some great lights: Amazon.comWalmart, or Home Depot.

Backyard Games

glamping ladder ball

If you don’t want to leave your glamping site to have fun while relaxing in the backyard, a few backyard games for the family will keep everyone outside instead of inside. Isn’t it true that we’ve spent too much time inside?

Why not use a wooden cornhole set to spend time with family and friends? Play in a one-on-one or two-team format. Simply aim, toss, and score big against the other team. The Ladder throw is another favorite game in my family.

Ladder toss (also known as monkey ball, ladder golf, ball rope, and hillbilly golf, among other names) is a lawn game in which bolas (two balls tied by a string) are thrown onto a ladder. This is a fun game (seen above), similar to cornhole, that will make you forget you’re camping in your own garden.
